Oxford Migration Conference

Shifting Borders: Oxford Migration Studies Society Conference, 2025

The theme of Shifting Borders explored the dynamic, evolving nature of migration and its impact on people, societies, economies, governance and cultures. The conference addressed the manifest ways in which the notion of the border has been (re)negotiated through technological advancement, cultural transformation, policy, and political change. Over the course of the two days, the conference brought together students, academics, and practitioners together for diverse academic panels alongside film screenings and evening events.

Panelist, Gender, Displacement, and the Politics of Belonging at the Border

I was honored to participate as a panelist exploring how gender shapes experiences of displacement, migration, and activism at and across borders. Together, we highlighted the resilience and spiritual activism of Women Human Rights Defenders in the US-Mexico borderlands, examined intersectional inequalities faced by female agricultural workers in Spain’s strawberry fields, and shed light on the identity transitions and grassroots activism of queer Iranian refugees navigating legal and cultural barriers.
